RefWorks privacy notice

RefWorks have begun asking users to consent to a privacy notice - obviously, it is entirely up to you whether you consent or not, but be aware, if you do not, your account will be erased and there will be nothing we can do to get it back.

RefWorks downtime 3am - 11am Sunday 19th August

We've been warned of planned downtime for Old RefWorks, 3am - 11am Sunday 19th August. New RefWorks, RefWorks Citation Manager, the RefWorks Google Docs plug-in, and Write-n-Cite may also not work properly during this time.

RefWorks down time 14 July 3am-7am, 11pm-4am

RefWorks is going to be having two periods of downtime this weekend 3am-7am on Saturday 14 and 11pm-4am on Saturday 14 - Sunday 15th July.

This will affect both old RefWorks and new RefWorks.

During this maintenance window both old and new RefWorks accounts will be inaccessible as will RefWorks Citation Manager, and the RefWorks Google Docs plug-in. Write-N-Cite users may notice a degradation in service so we recommend not using Write-N-Cite during this time.

Problem exporting references from IEEE Xplore to RefWorks (old and new) - update

IEEE are working on this issue and expect it to be fixed in July. In the meantime, if you need to export references from IEEE Xplore to RefWorks, old or new version, you can export the data as an RIS file:

then, when logged into RefWorks:

  •  select “References/Import” from the toolbar and then select BibTeX or RIS as the data source (old RefWorks, orange logo)

  • export your citations as RIS or BibTeX format and then when logged into RefWorks, select the Plus icon, Import References (New RefWorks, blue logo)

RefWorks maintenance window Sunday 28th January 3am-11am

RefWorks have announced a maintenance window, Sunday 28th January 3am-11am. During this time the RefWorks sites (old and new) will be offline.

RefWorks have given the following instruction to help you to continue using Write-n-Cite during this period:

Working Offline

Users will still be able to work offline during this planned maintenance window. Below are instructions for how to sync your RefWorks database. When RefWorks comes back online all of your files will automatically be synced with your personal database.

Sync My Database

Each time you launch Write-N-Cite, it will download any new or edited references and output styles.  Should you add data to your RefWorks account while you are working on a paper, your changes will become available as you work.  If you feel that your changes haven’t yet arrived you may wish to request that Write-N-Cite syncs with your RefWorks database.

To sync your database:

1. Click the RefWorks tab from the Word ribbon.

2. Click Sync My Database.
